JUAN VERGILLOS (Sevilla, Spain)
Juan Vergillos was awarded the National Prize of Flamencology by the Cátedra de Flamencología of Jerez. He obtained the literary prize “Anselmo González Climent” for essays written; the University of Sevilla and Young Creators of the Sevilla municipal government for novels created and “Gruta de las Maravillas for erotic literature. Vergillos has made a significant contribution to literature in the form of novels. These include: Una Especulación en Torno a la Estética del Flamenco (1999); Los Cuadernos Perdidos de Antonio Catena(2001); Conocer el Flamenco (2002); Las Rutas del Flamenco en Andalucía (2006) and Manuel Vallejo (2012). He created and directed the Festival Internacional de Artes Escénicas Vaivenes Flamenco-Riberas del Guadaíra. He was also the finalist for the Ateneo of Sevilla prize for novels. He directed and scripted shows for the companies of Andrés Marín, Rocío Márquez, La Choni, Fran Velasco and Guillermo Cano. He was coordinator of the educational program of the Agencia del Flamenco. Vergillos has given workshops, courses, lectures, and shows at the Universities of Sevilla, Pablo de Olavide, Córdoba, Granada, Cádiz, Barcelona, Navarra, Murcia, UCAM, Valencia, Alicante Internacional de Andalucía, Conservatory of Dance ‘María de Ávila’ in Madrid. As well as the Festival de Jerez, Bienal de Sevilla, Festival de las Minas, IES de Sevilla and Cádiz, Centro de Profesores in Málaga, Gran Teatro in Havanna, Valladolid, Salamanca, Cáceres, Zamora, Logroño, Barcelona, Dutch Bienal de Flamenco, an International Course of Flamenco Studies in Jerez, Congreso de Arte Flamenco, Congreso Universitario de Flamenco, Bienal of Young Interpreters in Rome, Festival de Nîmes, BBK series in Bilbao, Feira del Flamenco of Brasil, Villa Flamenca (Sao Paulo, Brasil), Escola Flamenca del Puerto (Porto Alegre, Brasil), Tokyo, Nagoya, House of Artists in Seúl (Korea) and many others. He directed the rerelease of historic recordings of the Universal company. He was a member of the panel of judges at the Festival Internacional del Cante de las Minas, Festival de las Minas in Japan, Compás del Cante of the Cruzcampo Foundation, Flamenco Hoy, Giraldillo of the Bienal de Sevilla and Literary Competition of the University of Sevilla. He was a Flamenco critic of the Diario de Sevilla and the Joly Andalucía Group as well as the director of the magazine vaivenesflamencos.com. For 20 years he has traveled throughout the world giving courses in which he has developed a new theory regarding the origin and aesthetics of this art-form. Vergillos is the first specialist to explain the history of flamenco within the framework of the history of Spain.
